Everyone is following the qualifying tournaments now, taking place in different countries, with interest. The thing understood by all national teams that participated in the World Championship on historical medieval battle at least once, is the fact that the quality of the training organization and quality of the qualifying events organization directly affect the results of the championship.

The national team of Russia has been the all-category champion for three years. The reason, apparently, is very clear: historical medieval battle (or as it was previously called, historical fencing) has been practiced in the country longer than anywhere else, there are many reenactors, so the competition for each place in the national team is greater, and it turns that the average level of fighters being in the team is also higher. However, not everything is as simple as it seems. In order to choose the best of the best, Russian fighters go through countless stages of selection, namely local, regional, national ones. And only before the start of the festival the best men are chosen to join the national team.

Concerning duel fighters, it’s even more complicated to join their ranks, because only the titled men can participate in the "Triathlon" qualifiers. Each of them has won dozens of championships, they are well-known, their fighting experience may exceed 10 years. For example, the «VIth Novgorod Open Tournament" (which was a "Triathlon" qualifier for "Battle of the Nations", where an open nomination was only "shield-sword", while "Triathlon" allowed participation only of champions and only of those who had sent their applications in advance. What can we say here is that "Triathlon" is the elite category.

If the countries that are not so much concentrated on qualifiers, tried to hold them at least in the Russian way, they would be very surprised by their performance at the championship.

The same path has been chosen by Poland, which will hold (actually, they are taking place now) qualifying rounds for "Battle of the Nations" for the second year in a row: the qualifiers will take place once a month within half the year, i.e. there will be six qualifying stages. Different stages will make emphasis on different aspects. And if a fighter fails to demonstrate good result at the beginning, but he shows a great progress in the end, as well as good potential, then he has all the chances to join the team. Even despite the fact that the national team will consist of experienced warriors, young men are also needed for a change, so they should be trained under hard conditions. Young men are always full of energy, always motivated and very ambitious, which will create a necessary and useful competition in the ranks of the team.

The 6 stages of qualifying events in Poland will help more people to participate (as they will be held in different regions), captain Hubert Filipiak will be able to cover the entire country. Secondly, if a fighter goes through six stages of selection, each time taking part in his category ("Triathlon", "Professional fights", "5 vs 5" or simply buhurts to participate in "21 vs 21"), the six tournament stages will give him enough experience to show a good result. Between the stages he can make adjustments to his workouts and get a response in the field conditions concerning his preparation, share his experiences with others and get good advice from the more experienced fighters. And if we talk about an advanced fighter, he is able to use it all even more effectively.

In general, this method of selection shows the shift from quantity to quality, and Poland confirmed it by its performance at "Battle of the Nations-2012".

An interesting approach has been chosen by the U.S. team for its training. America is a very big country, and the trip from one part of the continent to another will be a very long and tiring. And it’s difficult to gather people when they are separated by thousands of kilometers. So it’s impossible to organize a lot of joint events in this situation. But the captain of the national team of the USA, Andre Sinou has found another way to select the best ones and give them a great opportunity to train, while he can control the whole national team and know exactly what is going on. The country was divided into local, regional and divisional branches, each of them organizes workouts and events, each has a responsible person, who reports to the leader concerning the training process, novices and achievements of fighters. The system is very interesting, and, judging by a recent workout video provided by the Americans, it is beneficial. The guys have started to work harder and faster. And their number has increased. In general, we will be able to see results of the idea in six months, at "Battle of the Nations-2013."

So, here are the regional differences of the selection and training. In other countries they are somewhat similar to the above mentioned, but, of course, have their own features.

But what is important is that the selection is a very important stage in the preparation of the national team for the event. It not only forms the national team, but also allows its members to better the training, exchange and promote the sport in the country.

Therefore, if you do not have a variety of activities concerning selection to the national team, then think about it. Even if they are visited by the same people, they will still give invaluable experience, which will be handy in a fight.
